abstract = "{Drought is a major threat to Mediterranean water resources and it's
monitoring increasingly requires the use of data that captures
water conservation on land. In this study, GRACE and GRACE-FO
satellite data were used in combination with the GLDAS land
process model and the ERA5 reanalysis ensemble to investigate
the dynamics of drought in Greece during the period 2002--2025.
The GRACE-DSI and GGDI indices were calculated and compared with
the conventional SPI, SPEI and SRI indices, while wavelet and
Markov chain coherence analysis were applied to investigate the
relationships between water storage and hydrometeorological
variables, as well as the persistence of drought. The results
show a generalized decrease in water storage in Greece, with
groundwater depletion and soil moisture reduction being the main
factors behind the observed trend. The strongest negative
changes are found in the continental regions of the country,
while temperature and evapotranspiration appear as the most
important factors affecting the variability of water storage. At
the same time, indicators based on GRACE data record a greater
frequency and persistence of droughts compared to conventional
        indicators.}",
